E&J Brandy was established in 1975 and has more than 40 years of experience making brandies with rich and smooth flavors. While E&J is definitely newer to the brandy distilling scene than other brandy and cognac producers, they offer a wide range of selection from VS (very special) brandy to XO (extra old).

This particular brand is known for its adventures into apple and peach liqueur-based brandies, which stands in stark contrast to brandies traditionally made from grape wines. The ingredients that E&J uses in its distilling process is actually a key factor in how their brandies are priced.

What’s the difference between brandy and cognac?

E&J is a brandy producer, which means that their production takes place outside of Cognac, France. Only brandy made in this specific region is allowed to be labeled a cognac. Just like how scotch is whiskey made in Scotland, and how bourbon is whiskey made in Kentucky, the term “cognac” gives potential buyers insight into where the alcohol was produced.

Rémy Martin Brandy

In comparison another brandy brand, Rémy Martin, the brandy offered by E&J tends to be significantly cheaper and offer higher volumes. A bottle of Rémy Martin VSOP (375ml) can cost anywhere between $46.20 – $49.99, while E&J’s VSOP (750ml) peaks at around $13.99. This is most likely due to the fact that E&J is a very new brand and hasn’t had as much time to develop their brandies.

Paul Masson Brandy

Paul Masson is another brand that produces brandy out of the United States. Brandies made by this company run in the same range as products offered by E&J.  A 750ml bottle of Paul Masson Brandy VSOP ranges from $12.99 – $15.99, which is very similar to the cost of E&J’s own VSOP variety.

Martell Brandy

Martell is actually known for making cognac, not brandy. While this difference may seem irrelevant, it’s actually one of the primary reasons why drinks produced by Martell are a lot higher than anything E&J makes.

As stated before, cognac is technically brandy, but it’s made in a very specific region of France with a very strict distilling process. As a result, a bottle of Martell VSOP can range between $34.99 – $46.99, which is almost triple the amount a bottle of E&J VSOP currently goes for.

Christian Brothers Brandy

This might be the closest comparison on our list as it too is made in America. Their production begins in the 1800s and they still use copper stills which results in a full-bodied taste and rich flavored spirit. A bottle of Christian Brothers Brandy will cost roughly $9.

 

Common Recipes: What should you mix with E&J brandy?

Brandy is delicious on its own, but is versatile enough to be mixed into many delicious recipes. Here are just a few that we highly recommend giving a try!

Brandy Sour

• 2oz E&J XO brandy
• 2 tbsp lemon juice
• ½ tsp powdered sugar
• ½ sliced lemon
• 1 maraschino cherry

This particular drink balances the right amount of sourness, sweetness, and smoothness. Pour the brandy, lemon juice and powdered sugar into a mixer, and shake very well. Strain the ingredients into a small glass over cubed ice, topping with a slice of lemon and cherry. This drink is excellent for those who want to be introduced to brandy, but aren’t quite ready for the taste of brandy by itself.

Peach Palmer

• 1 part E&J Peach
• 1 part iced tea
• 1 part lemonade

Combine ingredients in a mixer and shake well before straining contents into a tall glass over cubed ice. For an added kick of zest, express a lime peel over the rim of the glass and garnish with a wedge of lime.
