Kraken Rum Price Guide 2021

An Introduction to Kraken Rum

A Brief History

Kraken Rum originates from Trinidad and Tobago and was first introduced to the world in 2010. They specialize in making black spiced rum made from sweet molasses. Their rum is combined with several different spices like cinnamon, ginger, clove, and more, which is then left to age for a few years in oak barrels. With a 47% alcohol by volume, Kraken is definitely a very strong and very delicious rum for the seasoned rum drinker.

The brand is named after the mythological creature known as the Kraken, a massive sea monster that was said to attack ships as they travelled between the Caribbean islands. The brand’s name and iconography are all an acknowledgement of the rum’s roots in the Caribbean, along with the many spices that come from the region to make the rum what it’s known for today.

Who’s it for?

Kraken is a relatively inexpensive rum option, which means that it’s very popular amongst the younger drinking crowd. But it’s smooth and rich taste is also often favored by long-time rum enthusiasts. You can easily find Kraken at your local liquor store, and their beautifully crafted bottles really bring a level of sophistication to anyone’s liquor cabinet.

Malibu offers their products for a very similar price range to Kraken. A 750ml bottle of Malibu Coconut retails between $19.99-$22.99. The main difference between these two brands ultimately comes down to the fact that they offer vastly different flavor profiles. While Kraken only offers black spiced rum, Malibu has a wide range of fruit-infused rum. It ultimately comes down to a consumer’s preference in taste when deciding between the two brands.

Captain Morgan

Captain Morgan is another rum-producing brand that sells spiced rum. On average, a 750ml bottle of Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum retails for roughly $23.99, which is slightly more expensive than the same size bottle of Kraken Black Spiced Rum. The primary difference between these two brands is that Kraken specializes in making black spiced rum exclusively, and many say that they can really taste the difference in quality. However, Captain Morgan is still a very good alternative.

Unlike Captain Morgan, Bacardi does not offer a black spiced rum to make for a fair comparison. Bacardi offers a wider range of products, however, whose prices are very similar to what’s offered by Kraken. A 750ml bottle of Bacardi Gold Rum averages for about $14.99, which is slightly cheaper than the Kraken Black Spiced Rum of the same volume.
