An Introduction to Malibu

A Brief History About Malibu

Malibu is specifically known for their coconut flavored liqueur. The brand itself is owned by the Pernod Ricard company, which bought Malibu in the year 2005 for almost $14 billion. Originally founded and distilled in Barbados in 1982, Malibu has since expanded their line to include several different flavors of rum.

Malibu rum is often a go-to option for many bartenders, as the their rum is famous for its light taste and fruitiness. They have also recently introduced their new line of tequila, known as Malibu Black and Malibu Red.

How is rum made?

Rum is produced when sugarcane juice is first fermented, distilled, and then aged in oak barrels. These wooden casks are what give the rum its color and flavor, growing darker over time. When it comes to Malibu rum, these batches are infused with fruits like coconut, lime, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, and more to give it a distinct taste.

Rum is a type of alcoholic spirit that’s often marketed to the average consumer. It’s relatively inexpensive and easy to mix into cocktails, meaning you’ll likely find a bottle or two of Malibu at your local bar, pub, or night club. It’s definitely a good idea to buy yourself a bottle to add if you’re hoping to expand or add to your liqueur collection.

Prices Compared to Other Rum Brands

Bacardi

Bacardi is a rum brand that has been around for a very long time. Established in 1862 in Santiago de Cuba, Bacardi has been producing some of the finest rums in the world today. That being said, they still manage to produce and sell their bottles of rum at very comparable prices to Malibu. If you’re concerned about choosing between Malibu and Bacardi, their similar price points may be a factor to consider.

Kraken

Kraken rum was first introduced to the world in 2010 out of Trinidad and Tobago. It’s made by fermenting and distilling sweet molasses and then aged for several years. Kraken is well known for their dark and spiced rum. In terms of price, the products offered by Kraken are very similar to what’s offered by Malibu. A 750ml bottle of Kraken Black Spiced Rum averages about $18.99-$19.99.

Captain Morgan

Captain Morgan rum, much like Bacardi and Kraken, is very similar to Malibu in terms of the prices of their products. On average, a 750ml bottle of Captain Morgan Original Spiced can retail between $16.99-$18.99. When it comes to rum, price really can’t be a deciding factor because they’re all reasonably priced. It ultimately comes down to your preference of rum flavor and which brand you support more.

What should you mix with Malibu rum?

The Classic Rum & Coke

  • 2oz Malibu Lime
  • 1 can Coca-Cola

Directions: Also known as a Cuba Libre, this classic cocktail is super simple to make. With only two ingredients, the method is quite clear. In a class over ice, pour both ingredients and give it a quick stir. You can feel free to garnish with a lime wedge for an extra pop of color. This drink is an excellent choice for those who are trying rum for the first time. If you find the rum too bitter or strong, simply add less of it until you’re satisfied with the taste.

If You Like Piña Coladas

  • 1 oz Malibu Coconut
  • 1 oz Malibu Pineapple
  • 1.5 oz Cream of Coconut

Directions: This drink is the perfect frosty treat for a hot summer day or backyard BBQ. In a shaker, combine the ingredients and shake vigorously to ensure that all the flavors are well-mixed. In a tall glass over ice, pour the contents of the mixer. You can feel free to garnish the glass with a small wedge of pineapple and a few maraschino cherries. One of the great things about Malibu is that their fruity rums can take place of any additional fruit juice. You’ll have all the fun of rum and no extra fruit juice calories!

The Daiquiri

  • 1.5 oz Malibu Passion Fruit
  • 0.75 oz Lime Juice
  • 0.25 oz Simple Syrup

Directions: In a shaker, combine all of the ingredients over ice and shake well. In a martini glass, strain the contents once they’re thoroughly chilled. This cocktail is incredibly easy to make and super customizable. If you’re not a fan of passion fruit, you can easily substitute the rum with a different flavor of Malibu rum. Why not try a mango daiquiri? Or even a tropical banana daiquiri? With Malibu, enjoying rum is that much easier!
