Created by Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co., TX Blended Whiskey presents a unique product. As opposed to creating and distilling their own whiskey, TX Blended Whiskey takes a sampling of local distilleries and blends them together to create their own product. Included in the blend are bourbon and whiskey.

A Straight Bourbon

The other offering from TX – yes, there are only two as of now – is what they describe as a Texas straight bourbon. Featuring locally, Texas-sourced ingredients like soft red wheat and yellow dent corn the bourbon is a true Texas product. Also unique to this craft distillery is their use of a yeast strain that they created. Most distilleries use yeast that has been purchased from a vendor. By law, the bourbon spends at least two years maturing in charred oak.

A Unique Process

Typically, when someone mentions a blended whiskey, thoughts of plastic bottle cheap stuff come to mind. In the case of TX Whiskey, they say they take painstaking efforts to source the best bourbon and whiskey to blend. It is then aged in what were once bourbon barrels. Per law, the whiskeys used in the blend are at least four years old.

When purchasing smaller batch, craft style spirits, it can be expected that you will have to pay a little more than average. TX is a brand that prides itself in its “craftiness”, with unusual touches like handmade caps. These features lend themselves to a higher priced product. As you can see in the chart below, the average prices are certainly slightly higher than your usual big brand names but are not terribly different. They are comparable enough that you can decide more based on taste than on price point.

While TX whiskey finds itself in the craft spirits category, its price point is not drastically higher than some other popular brand names. Jack Daniel’s is a popular brand name of Tennessee whiskey that can be found across the world. Prices typical for the same size bottle are only a couple of bucks less than the TX Blended Whiskey option.

Comparing Bourbon Prices

The most popular bourbon by name is likely Jim Beam Bourbon Whiskey. The typical bottle of Jim Beam will cost about ten dollars or so less than the TX Bourbon Whiskey. However, if you look at some of Jim Beam’s “higher end” selections that are a bit more comparable to a craft bourbon, the price points begin to even out.

Is the Cost of TX Whiskey Worth It?

Unfortunately, that is a question only you can answer. The only way to know for sure is to taste the different products and see if you notice any significant difference in taste. Some say that these craft style offerings, like the TX Blended Whiskey and TX Bourbon Whiskey, are more nuanced in taste than some of the bigger brand names. Others have a hard time detecting the subtle differences and are pleased with the more common, less expensive brands. It is up to you to decide!
