Introduction of Tanqueray Gin
A Bit of a Misnomer
Interestingly enough, as its mainstay is called London Dry Gin, Tanqueray Gin is not made in London. Once upon a time it was. However, it now hails from Scotland. I guess they thought Scotland Dry Gin didn’t have the same ring to it.
Flavors Come and Go
As it turns out, Tanqueray Gin has produced several different flavors along the way. Unfortunately, only one has lasted. Some flavors previously offered:
Keeping it Simple
Unlike many spirits companies, Tanqueray is keeping it relatively simple. It has three offerings currently, the original Tanqueray London Dry Gin (crafted in 1830), Tanqueray No. Ten (distilled four times), and the Tanqueray Rangpur (made with Rangpur limes).
Not So Secret Ingredients
Tanqueray Gin, both the London Dry and No. Ten offerings, include the same four basic botanicals to create its signatures flavor:
- 1Juniper Berries (surprise!)
- 2Coriander
- 3Angelica
- 4Licorice
However, the No. Ten also adds its own four to the mix for a total of eight not so secret ingredients:
- 1White Grapefruit
- 2Lime
- 3Orange
- 4Chamomile Flowers
This would explain where the citrus nose and taste come from in Tanqueray No. Ten.
Tanqueray Gin Prices
Comparing It to Itself
The first thing we should notice is the difference in price point between the original Tanqueray London Dry Gin and the Tanqueray No. Ten product. There is a whopping $14 difference, as seen in the chart below. Much of that can be explained by its inclusion of the four extra citrusy botanicals and small-batch style production.

Can I Find a Lower Priced Alternative?
Sure, you can. Good, inexpensive gin can be a little challenging to find and “cheap” gin has a really poor reputation for tasting just that...cheap. Here is a little chart highlighting some alternatives to Tanqueray Gin.
Comparable Alternatives to Tanqueray Gin - Less Expensive
Brand | Size | Price Average | Proof |
---|---|---|---|
Seagrams Extra Dry | 750ml | $12.00 | 80 |

Is a Higher Priced Gin Worth It?
With plenty of affordable options under $40 a bottle, like Tanqueray No. Ten, Bombay Sapphire, and Beefeater 24, there is really no reason to pay more than that. Even these selections make a more than presentable plain martini and are perfectly suitable for a myriad of cocktails. However, if you want to, here are a few higher priced alternatives to impress your friends with:
