Introduction to Stoli Vodka

Stolichnaya Vodka, usually called Stoli Vodka for short, is a well-respected premium vodka which has been sold in the United States since the 1970’s. Stoli price is reasonable at roughly $18 for a 750ml bottle and is distilled from wheat and rye. While it is not one of the very first brands of the spirit in America, it is historically important since it was the first to introduce the concepts of flavored vodka and premium vodka.

Even so, the industry does not seem to appreciate the pioneer much these days. The Latvian-produced vodka has not been selling particularly well in recent history. It is not even on the list of top five brands, which is dominated by homegrown and Western European names.

A Battle Over Rights

It doesn’t help that Stoli has long been involved in an extended international lawsuit about who should actually own the rights to the name, with the Russian government successfully snatching control in a few European markets, most recently Holland and some surrounding nations.

Nevertheless, the brand is still alive and well in the USA, and the courts show no signs of favoring Russian interests in the ongoing legal disputes. Stoli has managed to stay relevant in recent years by supporting political causes.

Stoli Vodka Prices

While Stoli was the first in the ultra-premium vodka field, these days it doesn’t seem to want to put itself in direct competition with other high-end vodka brands. The names of each offering often suggest that this is a luxury brand, containing words like “elite” or “gold,” but in reality, it can be considered a mid-range vodka in terms of price.

The standard offering is called “Stolichnaya Premium Vodka,” but if the quality is indeed any more “premium” than other brands, the price does not indicate it. It sells for about double the price for the cheapest of vodkas, but something like half the cost of the big three ultra-premium brands – Ciroc, Grey Goose, and Belvedere. Stoli is actually more accurately placed with New Amsterdam or Svedka.

Today a bottle of Stoli will cost you a mere $16.00 for the standard 750 mL 80-proof offering. Their most expensive variant is the 80-proof Stolichnaya Elit ($50.00), which is about the price of a normal bottle of Ciroc, but nowhere near Ciroc’s ultra-premium Ciroc Ten ($250.00) or even something like Grey Goose VX, which would be $70.00.

Not a Budget Vodka

Stoli is still priced higher than the cheapest brands, but it is able to compete on the 100-proof vodka scene. Their average price of $23.00 is much lower than that of Smirnoff, which usually sells its 100-proof vodka for some 10 – 20 dollars more. It is about the same as that of New Amsterdam for the 50% alcohol level.

As for the flavored vodkas, these tend to be sold in the mid-teens. This is not the lowest price for fruity vodkas, which can sell for as little as $8.00 or $9.00 from the cheapest competitors, but the cost is still small compared to other established brands. They offer some unique flavors, such as cucumber or grapefruit, which may be difficult to find from other companies, so they are also able to compete in the flavored niche, both through pricing and range of offerings.

Vodka Lemonade

This is a very simple cocktail that doesn’t involve much more effort than making a normal lemonade and still tastes delicious. Lemon is excellent at masking much of the taste of vodka, so it is not surprising. Mix the following ingredients together into a glass with large amounts of ice:

• 2 parts Stoli vodka
• 4 parts lemonade
• Sugar to taste
• Lemon slices, or even just lemon peels to increase the presence of the fruit

The Honey Bee

This recipe also involves the use of lemons but requires the unique flavor of honey, which is not very common cocktails. The result is something strong but also sweet, with the sweetness of the honey giving it a much different taste from that of raw sugar. Mix the following ingredients into a glass with ice:

• 1 part regular Stoli vodka
• 2 parts fruit-flavored rum
• 1 part lemon juice
• One tablespoon of honey

The Vodka Sunrise

Here is a recipe that uses oranges instead of lemons. It is suspected that the vodka sunrise is so named because it is light on alcohol and therefore can be drunk for breakfast. Again, because of the strong taste of the orange juice, it can be consumed at any time and still have an excellent taste. Mix the following ingredients in a glass with ice and then stir:

• One part vodka
• Four parts orange juice
• ¼ part grenadine syrup
• One tablespoon of honey

Grenadine syrups are the most popular sweetener for this cocktail, but it could just as well take honey or sugar and still taste great. Citric fruits, such as oranges and lemons, tend to mix well even with hard alcohol like vodka.
