An Introduction to Bacardi

A Brief History

Bacardi was founded in 1862 by the Bacardi family in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. Founded specifically by Facuno Bacardi Masso, who was a Spanish wine merchant, he moved to Cuba and began producing white rum. Bacardi is a brand of rum that has gone through many fascinating shifts and changes throughout history, including the prohibition period in the United States and the Cuban Revolution.

Today, Bacardi Limited is one of the largest privately-owned spirits company in the world. Beneath the label of Bacardi, there are nearly two hundred different sub-brands and labels. Bacardi has masterfully perfected the art of distilling and producing rum, which is evident in their spirit’s smooth finish and deep flavors. Very much a drink of the people, Bacardi’s rums are inexpensive without sacrificing quality.

Kraken

In terms of prices, Kraken and Bacardi offer their rums at very similar prices. However, it should be noted that Kraken specializes specifically in black spiced rum, which offers an entirely different rum drinking experience. Bacardi does offer a black rum, Bacardi Black, but mostly have a wide range of fruit-infused rums that are a lot lighter in taste. If you’re a rum drinker looking for something light and not so intense, Bacardi’s rums may be a more suitable option for you.

Malibu

Bacardi’s most expensive bottle typically peaks around $29.99. Malibu is another rum brand that offers a wide range of flavors, making it the most similar to Bacardi. The primary difference between the two brands is that Bacardi has been producing rum for a much longer time, and their long history and experience definitely comes through in the quality of their rum.

Directions: This drink is definitely sweet (and maybe a little sour), which is perfect for those wanting to mix a rum cocktail. Not only is this drink beautiful to look at, but it blends perfectly with Bacardi rum. In a cocktail shaker, mix all of the ingredients in over fresh ice. Shake very well so that the flavors have a chance to combine. In a tall glass over fresh ice, pour in the contents and top up with ginger beer. • 3 oz Ginger Beer
  • 0.5 oz Lime Juice
  • Lime Wedges to Garnish

Directions: The Dark and Stormy is a classic rum cocktail that you should definitely give a try. As an added bonus, this drink is super simple to make. In a tall glass, simply pour in the ingredients over cubed ice. Give the contents a bit of a stir and then garnish with a fresh lime wedge for an extra hit of citrus!
